(Remember) when the wife of 'Imrân said: "O my Lord! I have vowed to You what (the child that) is in my womb to be dedicated for Your services (free from all worldly work; to serve Your place of worship), so accept this from me. Verily, You are the All-Hearer, the All-Knowing."

Then when she gave birth to her [child Maryam (Mary)], she said: "O my Lord! I have given birth to a female child," – and Allâh knew better what she brought forth, – "And the male is not like the female, and I have named her Maryam (Mary), and I seek refuge with You (Allâh) for her and for her offspring from Shaitân (Satan), the outcast

The Station of the Prophets’ عليهم السلام Supplications[1]

There are many examples in the Qur’aan of the Prophets and Messengers making du’aa to Allaah, asking their Lord for help, seeking a means of nearness to Him, humbling themselves to Him and recognizing their weakness in front of Him. The examples show their humility, hope, fear and their perfect manners in humbling themselves before their Lord. These examples teach the believers the correct ways and means of guidance in supplicating to Allaah and show how to ask Him for help.
In this regard, Allaah mentions in Soorah al An’aam a little about the Prophets, their blessed stories, their noble deeds and their superior characteristics. Allaah says,

“TThey are those whom Allâh had guided. So follow their Guidance.” [al An’aam 6:90]

This is an order for the Prophet (Muhammad) صلى الله عليه وسلم to follow their ways and stick to their methodology and a piece of advice for his people, ummah to do the same.

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم did what he was commanded with and took them as an example. He followed the guidance of the previous Messengers. He encompassed all their perfection in that he possessed blessed virtues and great characteristics which were superior to all of the creation. He was the head of the Messengers, Imaam of the people of taqwa and a role model for the righteous. May the peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him and upon all of the Prophets and Messengers.
The Prophets were the best of all people. There are lessons in their stories for the believers to take from. The believers should imitate them in all aspects of their religion: in tawheed (oneness of Allaah’s Lordship, worship and Names and Attributes), worship, da’wah (calling to Allaah), patience and steadfastness in times of hardships and difficulties. They should meet these times with tranquillity, steadfastness and peace of mind. They should imitate them in truthfulness and sincerity to Allaah in all situations. We can learn lessons from their stories, be reminded and encouraged. We learn that after hardship comes ease and that difficulties do pass. We learn that there can be good endings in this life which is a consolation and comfort for those who are sad, it increases those who have taqwaa and gives pleasure to the worshippers and is a comfort to the believers.

“Indeed In their stories, there is a lesson for men of understanding. it (the Qur'an) is not a forged statement but a confirmation of the Allâh's existing Books [the Taurât (Torah), the Injeel (Gospel) and other Scriptures of Allâh] and a detailed explanation of everything and a Guide and a Mercy for the people who believe.”
[Yusuf 12:111]

Allaah chose His Prophets and favoured them. He made them leaders for mankind and the best role models. Through them mankind learned about Allaah and worship Him alone. Through them they learned about the straight path. It is by following in their footsteps that the people of Paradise will experience all the blessings and success of gaining all goodness and happiness in this life and the Next. In fact, a servant’s share of happiness is in proportion to his following in the footsteps of the Prophets and in his treading upon their path.

“and we made them leaders, guiding (mankind) by Our Command, and we inspired In them the doing of good deeds, performing Salât (Iqâmat-as-Salât), and the giving of Zakât and of us (Alone) they were worshippers.” [Al Anbiyaa 21:73]

Allaah perfected the Prophets in their doing of good deeds, establishing the salaah, paying the zakaah and their continuation in worshipping Allaah. Through this they became role models and whoever followed them would be successful. Another aspect of their perfection that Allaah mentions is their strong link with Allaah and their perfect turning to Him in all their affairs.

“Verily, they used to hasten on to do good deeds, and they used to call on us with hope and fear, and used to humble themselves before us.” [al Anbiyaa 21:90]

This means that they hurried in doing good deeds. They performed them at their best times and completed them in the best manner. They did not leave something of good if they were able to do it and they used to seize the opportunity.
“they used to call on us with hope and fear” means that they used to ask Us about desirable matters regarding benefits in this World and the Next and they used to seek Our protection from undesirable matters that were harmful to them in this world and the Next. They hoped and feared and were not neglectful.
“and used to humble themselves before us.” This means that they were very humble. What state is more complete than theirs? How perfect was their knowledge of their Great Lord and Noble Creator and how perfect was their connection with Allaah. Shaykh al Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah said, “All the Prophets asked Allaah and supplicated to Him as is mentioned in the stories of Aadam, Ibraaheem, Moosaa and others.”[2]

A Muslim should know the stories of the Prophets and learn about their worship and their humility and humbleness. They should know how Allaah described them as having complete truthfulness and perfect characteristics. They should know about their superiority, their virtues and their excellence and perfection. This is so that a Muslim can imitate them.

In many places in the Qur’aan, Allaah mentions numerous examples of the supplications of the Prophets and their greate hope in Allaah’s mercy, their wanting Allaah’s Grace and their fleeing to Him in every situation. Allaah mentioned the supplications of Aadam, Nooh, Ibraaheem, Ismaa’eel, Moosaa, Yunus, Ayyoub, Eesaa along with others, may Allaah’s peace and blessings be upon them. This is in order to teach the people the description and etiquettes of supplication and how to turn to Allaah in the best manner and humble yourself to the Lord of the worlds. Allaah mentions how He answered their supplications and fulfilled their wishes. He mentions how He granted them ease in their affairs no matter how great the circumstances were or how severe the trial. The Prophets experienced trials and suffering. Their peoples were transgressors but they had patience and turned to their Lord hoping for ease and a way out. Allaah granted them a way out, helped and supported them because of their perfect turning to Him and having great hope in Him.

Whoever follows them in this will be helped and saved in the same way. Reflect upon what Allaah says,

“And (remember) Dhan-Nûn (Jonah), when He went off in anger, and imagined that we shall not Punish Him (i.e. the calamites which had befallen him)! but He cried through the darkness (saying): Lâ ilâha illa Anta [none has the Right to be worshipped but You (O Allâh)], glorified (and Exalted) are You [above All that (evil) they associate with You]. Truly, I have been of the wrong-doers." So we answered his call, and delivered Him from the distress and Thus we do deliver the believers (who believe In the Oneness of Allâh, abstain from evil and work righteousness).” [Al Anbiyaa 21:87-88]

In this is a promise and glad tidings for every believer who imitates Yunus’ supplication when he experiences hardships and calamities. Sa’d bin Abee Waqqaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Allaah will answer the supplication of a Muslim for anything if he supplicates with the du’aa of Dhun Noon (Yunus) when he was in the belly of the whale: لا إله إلا أنت سبحانك إني كنت من الظالمين[3]

...We ask Allaah’s help in following the Prophets and treading upon their path. We ask Allaah to give us the success to do this, indeed He is All Hearing and answers du’aa.
